Lucretia Stewart’s Family Record

A page from a Bible owned by Lucretia Stuart, a woman born enslaved on Fairfield Plantation near Georgetown in 1807. The Bible was given to Stuart by Mary M. Pringle, her enslaver, in 1856. Stuart used the Bible as a family record, documenting births, marriages, and deaths for multiple generations of her family. Descendants maintained the record through the middle of the twentieth century.
