The home of a free person of color Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson and her descendants from 1844 until 1971 when it was sold to the College of Charleston. Many free people of color lived in this neighborhood, with many choosing to live slightly north of here, beyond Calhoun Street, which area was not annexed to the city until 1849. The house was built in 1817.
